About Sitamarhi

Sitamarhi is deeply revered as the sacred birthplace of Goddess Sita, the beloved consort of Lord Rama in the Hindu epic Ramayana. Situated in the northern part of Bihar, India, within the historic Mithila region, it is a significant pilgrimage site for millions of devotees.

Our Mission

The Sitamarhi Tourism project is a community-driven initiative aimed at documenting and sharing the rich cultural, spiritual, and historical heritage of Sitamarhi. We provide accurate travel information, pilgrimage routes (like the Mithila Circuit), and cultural insights into local traditions, including Madhubani art and the grand Ram Navami Mela.

History & Significance

According to legend, King Janak of Mithila was ploughing a field during a drought to please the gods. While ploughing, he found a baby girl in a furrow, whom he named Sita. The exact spot of this divine discovery is believed to be Punaura Dham, just a few kilometers from the modern town of Sitamarhi.

Over the centuries, Sitamarhi has flourished as a center of Maithil culture and devotion. Temples like the Janaki Sthan Mandir and Punaura Dham stand as testaments to the region's enduring spiritual legacy.
